Just saw this this morning and it caught my eye...
The first line in the post says it all "People sometimes ask how to get involved in open source software..."
Actually, it wouldn't be weird to just start submitting code.
Many open source projects use source control as a way to pick and chose community submissions.
If you want to direct your work, you can attempt to tackle open bugs and issues with a project.
Look for open bugs and try to solve some. When you have a solution, ask a submitter.
