Having seen a recent increase in plugins aimed at integrating other services such as bug trackers and continuous integration server with IDEs, I'm wondering if Stack Overflow would be a candidate for similar work.

Some thoughts that spring to mind would be notifications of responses within the IDE. Maybe some type of cross referencing from source code to questions asked.

Any other useful things that can be made possible by such an integration?

No, it doesn't have a real benefit, IMHO.

+1: It's one thing having SO open in the browser, but having it integrated with the IDE would be the most distracting thing ever.

You question implies that you would be posting code (right out of the IDE) to StackO. I'd be very careful not to post any production code, connection strings, etc. anywhere on the web. Having said that, I can see how notifications (as Moayad suggest) could be useful.
