I know you should use a StringBuilder when concatenating strings but I was just wondering if there is a difference in concatenating string variables and string literals. So, is there a difference in performance in building s1, s2, and s3?
string foo = "foo";
string bar = "bar";
string s1 = "foo" + "bar";
string s2 = foo + "bar";

Hello.
I am creating a service, that needs to perform the following tasks: consult bank services and persist data into DB.
The dificult is: Its needed to execute each process in parallel.
I mean the better choice is implementing a multithreading service, running each instance per thread. But how its done?
Thanks

Is there an F# equivalent to eval? My intent is to have my app load a small code sample from a file and essentially
let file = "c:\mysample"
let sample = loadFromFile file
let results = eval(sample)
I am new to F# and trying to figure out some of the limitations before I apply it to a project.
Thank you

Which parts of the framework require a user to be more than a Standard User? The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to compile a list of possible issues with our existing applications when migrating to Windows 7.
Now, I can think of a few things myself:
Writing to Eventlog
Writing to Registry Keys outside of Current_User scope

I'm having problems getting my game engine to run on my brother's machine, which is running 64-bit Windows 7. I'm developing on 32-bit XP SP2.
My app uses XNA, FMOD.NET, and another dll I wrote entirely in C#. Everything is targeted to x86, not AnyCPU. I've read that this is required for XNA to work because there is no 64-bit xna framew...
In order to reduce repetition and streamline testing/debugging, I'm trying to find the best way to develop a group of libraries that many projects can utilize. I'd like to keep individual executable relatively small, and have shared libraries for math, database, collections, graphics, etc. that were previously scattered among several pro...
In vb.net (2008), I want to be able to control when a contextMenuStrip (context menu) is displayed. I don't want it to always appear when the right mouse button is clicked...only when certain criteria within my program are met. I figure I would use addHandler but I'm not exactly clear on how to completely control the opening of the con...
Given an XDocument instance, how can I easily get a TextReader that represents that instance?
The best I've been able to come up with is something like this (where xml is an XDocument instance):
var s = new MemoryStream();
var sw = new StreamWriter(s);
xml.Save(sw);
sw.Flush();
s.Position = 0;
TextReader tr = new StreamReader(s);

I'm thinking of one day moving to Japan and I was wondering if anyone here has any experience working there.
I'm curious as to what languages/technology are popular there for web development and software development.
I have heard Ruby is/was strong there due to its founder being Japanese.
What would you recommend someone focus on if t...
I have what is undoubtedly a simple question, but I can't seem to find that answer anywhere. I need a component that will allow me to enter a signature on a Windows Mobile 5 device.
I need to integrate it into my .NETCF program. I would prefer it be free (getting budget approval takes so long). (I have seen the "for pay" one by Resco.)
I would need to end up storing the signature in a SQL Server database (it has to be able t...
The following code does not compile:
//int a = ...
int? b = (int?) (a != 0 ? a : null);
In order to compile, it needs to be changed to
int? b = (a != 0 ? a : (int?) null);
Since both b = null and b = a are legal, this doesn't make sense to me.
Why do we have to cast the null into an int? and why can't we simply provide an explicit...
I know there's a lot of questions on SO similar to this, but I couldn't find one for this particular issue.
A couple of points, first:
I have no control over our Sharepoint server. I cannot tweak any IIS settings.
I believe our IIS server version is IIS 7.0.
Our Sharepoint Server is anticipating requests via NTLM.

I'm looking for some pointers on implementing Custom Events in VB.NET (Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5).
I know that "regular" (non-custom) Events are actually Delegates, so I was thinking of using Delegates when implementing a Custom Event. On the other hand, Andrew Troelsen's "Pro VB 2008 and the .NET 3.5 Platform" book uses Collection ...
