I tried loading this into Expresso (a regular expression tool), and it crashed while parsing it.

According to this email it is a regular expression used to "validate email addresses according to the RFC 822 grammar".

Actually, I seriously doubt you came across it in your code since it was included in an answer given to another question not half an hour ago :-).

See here. It's an email validation regex, possibly one of the worst regexes ever conceived, in my opinion.

That regex validates e-mail addresses according to RFC822. The source is here.

The author notes:

Implementing validation with regular expressions somewhat pushes the limits of what it is sensible to do with regular expressions.

I think that's understating it a little...

I believe I actually got this printed up on a t-shirt a bit over a year ago.

It's an almost RFC compliant email validation regex. I think the only thing it misses are comments.

This is one of those regexes you do not want to use to search for email addresses, and certainly not for checking if a string holds nothing but an email address. Pasting your regex into RegexBuddy along with the test subject:

"My email is [email protected]!"

highlights:

" [email protected]!"

(I added quotes to point out the leading space.)

I have a detailed article on my site about matching email addresses with a regular expression. The short answer is that there's a trade-off between how complex and how accurate you want your regex to be, and when to decide to use other methods such as actually trying to send email to the email address. [email protected] may look like a valid email address, but that doesn't mean that such a mailbox actually exists.
