Hi all,

a few month ago, I passed the SCJP - the Sun Certified Java Programmer.

I intended to do the SCWCD now, but there's this Sun Certification Plus-thing going on... so I don't know if it's worth learning for the SCWCD any more. Does anybody know what's exactly happening?

Should I continue with SCWCD/SCJD, ... or should I wait until the plus-certification?

Thanks a lot for your advice,

Stefan

A:

The general consensus of SO has been practical experience > certifications.

If you don't have enough practical experience I would wait on getting more certifications.
If you think you have enough practical experience you definitely need more practical experience.

hm... I don't understand completely... so would you continue with the "old" certification system or wait and (re)start with the new one?

@swalkner, actually, he didn't answer your question at all, but instead chose to question the value of certifications in general. Compare with: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/281100/is-it-worth-becoming-sun-certified/281127#281127. While "practical experience > certifications" is *obviously* true, this is **not** a helpful answer here; the general merits of certifications have been discussed ad nauseum in other questions (e.g. the one I linked to).

I took the Java Programmer certification some years back, and the amount of study needed to pass the test made my knowledge of Java much better. A certification indicates to a future employer that you can actually _learn_ the language. Previous jobs indicate that you can actually _work_ with the language :D

Firstly, as Spencer said, experience usually trumps certifications on a resume.

It looks like they're going to retire the current certs, so if you aren't ready for SCWCD now, it may be best to wait. From http://www.sun.com/training/certification/beta_scjp_plus.xml

Q: Will this exam replace the current Java Programmer exam? A: Sun believes that performance based Java Programming certification provides both candidates and employers with greater assurance that their skills will meet the needs of the Java Programmer role. Sun will retire the prior versions of the Java Programmer certification in the near future. Sun will provide a public notification of at least 90 days in advance of any exam retirement.

(Thanks for actually trying to answer the specific question!) But note that in your FAQ quote "Sun will retire the prior versions of the Java Programmer certification" refers to versions of *SCJP*, and doesn't say anything about SCWCD.
