I'm confused on where to obtain Visual SourceSafe.

Where can I download Visual SourceSafe? (Is it even free?)

I don't see that it's included with Visual Studio?

I am running Visual Studio 2008.

Edit - I'm not asking for your opinions on SourceSafe, I'm asking how to obtain it? (i.e. Where do you download it or install it from?)

Edit - I don't have an MSDN subscription.

Edit - I know it sucks. I just want to know how I can obtain it. So far it seems I need an MSDN subscription. I can't believe it's not sold separately?

It's not free. And it sucks.

If you have to use it, ask your employer for the cd. If you don't have to use it, use subversion (which is free and doesn't suck).

So it comes on a CD with Visual Studio?
Is it on a separate CD?
Yes it is inside your MSDN, however: Do not use it! It is broken by design and will lose your versions (sometimes earlier, sometimes later, but always before projects finishs)

@Peter Parker - I don't have an MSDN subscription. I have VS 2008 Professional. Maybe I'll look over that CD again.

Don't use VSS. Depending on how many connections you need, Perforce has a free option and SVN is free too. If you must use it and you have an MSDN subscription, you can download it.

Per your edits: (1) We're just trying to help; (2) Outside of MSDN, you need to buy it.

So you can only download it with an MSDN subscription?
Yes, that's correct.
JP Alioto
@JP - Really? There must be a way of purchasing it separately?
Yes, there is, see link. But, not sure where you can buy and download.
JP Alioto
@JP - Thank you for the link.
You're welcome, glad to help. Good luck. :)

VSS is not worth your time. Typically, it is obtained via MSDN or other such Volume Licensing program through Microsoft. A few less reputable sites appear to sell it as well if you Google for it. Most free alternatives are more reliable, feature complete and well, safe for your code. Look around on SO there are many threads discussing Mercurial, Subversion, Git (not for the faint of heart) and others.

Visual SourceSafe does not come with Visual Studio. You have to obtain (and pay for) it separately.

As other have said, Subversion is both free and better. You can download it here:

Ok, is there a website where I can purchase it separately?
The idea of purchasing VSS separately hurts my soul. Ouch.

You should have this inside your CD-collections coming with Visual Studio / MSDN

Peter Parker
I don't think he has msdn.

You really don't want VSS. It really sucks. It uses a bunch of files on a share, and it frequently corrupts them. Any random system like Subversion or CVS will do better than Source(un)Safe.

+1 for source(un)safe

vss does suck, but stating this does not answer the question at hand. :)

You really deserve something better. Why don't you try subversion, as Joel Coehoorn mentioned? It's free, by the way, and using it together with TortoiseSVN (available here: http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads), makes you never want SourceSafe Again.

In answer to your question. Did you try Googling "Buy VSS"? Came right up.

Amazon appears to sell it. http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Visual-Sourcesafe-6-0-VERSION/dp/B00002SFLN
