We have lots of referrals from Windows live mail that look like:

co114w.col114.mail.live.com
by123w.bay123.mail.live.com
sn105w.snt105.mail.live.com
co101w.col101.mail.live.com

and also from Yahoo mail that look like:

uk.mg41.mail.yahoo.com
us.mg2.mail.yahoo.com
us.mc1113.mail.yahoo.com
cn.mc150.mail.yahoo.com
in.mc84.mail.yahoo.com
de.mc264.mail.yahoo.com

which I'm trying to group using custom 'Search and replace' filters on the referral field.
I've tried
Search string: \w{6}\.\w{6}\.(mail\.live\.com)
Replace string: x.x.$11
to group the former referrals as x.x.mail.live.com

and

Search string: (\w{2})\.\w{2,6}(\.mail\.yahoo\.com)
Replace string: $1.x$2
to group the latter by country code, e.g. uk.x.mail.yahoo.com

Neither makes any difference. Am I missing something obvious?
