Hi,

I need to get myself a protable laptop which has good battery life and can develops apps in the LAMP enviroment. The laptop is not replacing my desktop but I am on the move most of the day, I am looking at a Acer Timeline 13.3 Core Solo SU3500.

Does anyone know anything about this processor and if it is powerful enought to develop with?

Cheers

JJ.

Should be powerful enough. Especially if you use resource economical development environment (like vim/emacs).

Its just fine.

Whilst fast machines with fast solid-state disks and lots of RAM are definitely nicer to use today, this doesn't mean that a slow/cheap/old computer isn't perfectly adequate.

LAMP was first developed and even deployed on machines considerably slower than today's laptops.

Well, I had a pentium 4 not HT not dual-core no-nothing, with only 512 MB RAM for quite sometime, and I did lots of LAMP development on it.
Only problem I had was that I couldn't use a big IDE (mainly because of not having enough RAM).

So, a computer like this, with

  • Core CPU (even if mono-core and 1.40 GHz)
  • 4 GB RAM

Will probably be OK :-)

Maybe you won't be able to use Eclipse PDT ; but with a screen that size (1366 x 768), it wouldn't be much helpful anyway, I guess -- well, actually, with small fonts maybe it would maybe be OK...

(Provided you really use it for development, which means 1 user, a not too big database, ... )

I want to run Zend Studio on it, you reckon it wouldnt handle it? And good point about the screen size.

Zend studio is Eclipse-based (for the newest versions, at least). Only one core at 1.4 GHz might not be much... It might run... But probably not quite fast, I suppose

Cheers for response, do you know of any other light weight version of Zend?
John Jones
I don't ; fact is if you want some feature-rich IDE, you'll have to pay the price : it'll require quite a bit of RAM / CPU :-(
