In this day of the internet, do good quality developer-orientated paper-based magazines still exist and are any worth reading? I know that Microsoft do their MSDN magazine, but that is very much .NET orientated. Do general purpose magazines still exist? Would you recommend any of them?

Hmm. IEEE Software, 2600 and (an online magazine) A List Apart are great. ALA is mostly design but they branch out into web dev and other tips and tricks articles on occasion.
2600 it technically a "hacker" magazine but personally I find it an excellent resource for things NOT to do in my production apps.
IEEE Software is by far the best developer magazine I read. It's not very academic, and is generally filled with good, real-world-applicable articles. The editorials are generally horrible, though.
Sure, Dr. Dobbs is good for business-oriented development.
But I lament the loss of fun programming magazines. The 1980's had "Creative Computing", "RUN Magazine", and others that presented programs that were fun to use. Dr. Dobbs, for all of its value, just isn't fun.
Does anyone else think there's a need for recreational programming magazines? I've written about this here.
