I am trying to come up with a good name for a resource which relates people/users to events they attend (many to many relationship). I have thought of attendance but it doesn't really sound great...a person has many events through attendances. I have thought of invitation as well but I would want to reserve that in case I have some functionality to invite people to the site.
Any thoughts? Am I just being too picky?

I think you are really a bit too picky. I'm not a native English speaker but "attendances" sounds pretty good to me and that's what I'd go with.
Making things from things we don't usually consider to be things is funny, sometimes. :)
Perhaps "appearance"? People "make an appearance" when they show up for an event. Then the number of people at a given event is the number of "appearances".
How about simply "attends", as in "Isaac attends the HPL Film Festival"?
