I have done a little undergrad research with a professor at my school but did not get a paper published. can I put this as research experience on my resume? if yes how should I write it?

The experience you gained working for the professor should be mentioned. If the paper didn't get published there's no need to mention it up front. Just talk about the work you did and how it helped make you better at what you do.

Depending on the nature of the work your looking for and the things you did for your professor, you could list some of your skills, in addition to the research.

For example, if you think it's relevant, you could list the languages / environments that you know (Java, Python, C#/.NET, whatever), and/or the type of programming experience you have (web applications, user interfaces, databases, etc.)

The key issue is: is that professor (or, less of a plus, somebody else who worked on the project with you, e.g. a research assistant of the professor) willing to act as a reference for you? You need to ask them. If they aren't, then I would avoid mentioning that research in your resume: with no reference and no publication, it's really an unsubstantiated claim that's not worth much and could hurt you. If you CAN get a reference confirming how well you worked on that project, especially from your professor, that changes everything: by all means, if that's the case, bank on it!-)

I have not spoken to the professor yet about it but I am pretty sure he will be willing to do so
