Just found out that the hosting company where I'll probably put one site has limit of 1000 emails per day.

They suggested to use an outside email service specialized in bulking email. What do you people use? What will stackoverflow use?

Thanks

Here's the AuthSMTP price sheet. Not sure if this is the "best" service but it's one of the major ones.

their prices are not very competitive.

A hotel/music-venue I do various filming/sound-recordings/computer-stuff for uses Constant Contact happily. The pricing is decent, it's easy enough to use that I never have to help the owner with it, and it gives a good amount of info on clicks/bounces/etc

It's more than a SMTP server you can send thousands of emails from - not sure if that's what you're looking for?

I've used a company called "Campaign Monitor" -- they were excellent in every way.

Also -- hello Artur! Hope everything is good ;-)

Thanks for the answer CodingTheWheel.

That service seems a little steep, I can get roughly 30000 emails per month in the server if I spread the deliveries. In authsmtp.com I'll have to pay about 400 euros yearly for the same service.

It doesnt work just for data - the limit is whichever I reach first, data or number of emails.

Depending on the number of emails sent, you cuold use something like Mail::Bulkmail, a perl module, that will send less email be using an envelope (a SMTP feature). Only one email will be sent to each domain. Then the mail server of that domain will take care of the copying and sending the mails to all users. The only problem is that you can't use dynamic emails, like different names in each mail.

There are loads of resellers for bulk mailing; like http://www.ezemail.com

All of these companies will provide a lot of value-added services beside just the sending the email. They're not simply sending emails on your behalf, or leasing you raw computing power.

They'll be contributing (or up-selling) on features such as analytics of your email campaign, preventing your email from being marked as spam, helping with the look of your email (providing templates etc), tracking bounces and a lot more.

Thanks for the answers, going to look them up.

I want to send dynamic emails based in the user.

I know the services have added value, but I wasn't counting that it would be more expensive than the hosting service.

@Leon Hey! I'm fine, I'll send you an email soon showing you what I'm up to now! :-)

I would recommend http://madmimi.com/ it's a really simple service, with a monthly fee depending of your amount of members, It also has an API (quite simple for the moment) but it allows to manage a couple of things from different applications,

btw, it also has a nice realtime mail tracking feature!

This is an old question, but another option available in 2010 is MailChimp.

For transactional email, see this question.
