Primer on writing documentation with Sphinx?

I followed a tutorial that showed only how to build it, I have it up and running on my web host but I'm a bit confused on how I should be creating and writing documentation.

So far I've made a small little edit to the index.rst file and made a new reference to a page, then it obviously complains that it's an "undefined label: foobarz ".

Is there some sort of primer out there anyone can recommend? Do I always have to regenerate the html? Is there some easier way that I can edit files on the fly in a web page such as a wiki or does that go against the whole concept?

From your question I can't tell if the sampledoc tutorial is the tutorial that you've already tried. If you haven't tried it I suggest you do.
