However, I must point out that SEO is not a feature you can add later. You need to design your site with SEO in mind since the beginning. That includes Urls, header tags, content structuring, copywriting etc. These make an integral part of an application composition and architecture.
Absolutely look at these questions:
Whats the most important part of html page in terms of SEO keyword targeting- the title?
The most powerful SEO action is link building, by far. Nothing comes close in effectiveness.
So here is my technique (2 of them really):
Create some keyword targeted content for the long tail, including out links to good authorities in your field and ask folks by email or phone to link to you.
I agree with the dude above - the time to start your SEO is not when the site is built, but before it is built.
If you are new to SEO - the one step I feel like people always forget is this:
1. RESEARCH YOUR KEYWORDS
When I started my first internet company, I spent 15 months ranking for a keyword that was what I thought was most important for my business. Once I ranked first, I realized that it didn't convert all that well, and there wasn't much traffic in the area.
I usually recommend making a very generic and broad adwords campaign to start off. Figure out what paid keywords generate traffic and results, then build an SEO campaign off of that.
As for the most important single feature - I would say h1's with keywords in the first 5 words, if not just the keywords alone.
Title is the key for your SEO.Don't duplicate the title, keep on using one keyword for most of your title. Eg: If you website is www.bookseller.com then try to put "book" in new pages title like "buy a book for seo" or "e-book for seo" or "book: my first 30 days with seo"
I understand its not possible to add in every title but make sure your domain name and your titles match.
