Take a look at the 15 minute SEO list. Should be enough there to get you going.

H1 + SEO-friendly Url + Meta description.

However, I must point out that SEO is not a feature you can add later. You need to design your site with SEO in mind since the beginning. That includes Urls, header tags, content structuring, copywriting etc. These make an integral part of an application composition and architecture.

Absolutely look at these questions:

Whats the most important part of html page in terms of SEO keyword targeting- the title?

Is SEO knowledge important for web developers?

What do you mean by H1?
Shore
H1 = the upper header tag, which each page should use for its title. You know this already of course, right? Right?
Developer Art
Sorry,I didn't know it yet:(Do you mean <title><h1>Title name</h1></title> or something else?
Shore
<head><title>Page title</title></head> - is for the page title to show in the browser title bar. You also need to add a header for the page itself, like this: <body><h1>Best rabbits in New York</h1></body>. In combination, the page title, page header(s) and the keywords in the Url help search engines see what the page is about.

The most powerful SEO action is link building, by far. Nothing comes close in effectiveness.

So here is my technique (2 of them really):

Create some keyword targeted content for the long tail, including out links to good authorities in your field and ask folks by email or phone to link to you.

Can you be more detail about "keyword targeted content for the long tail"? And I know your 3rd technique actually works of course, but does "including out links to good aurhorities" also work?
Shore
Find the SEO keyword tool or look at keywords in google analytics. A long tail keyword is one that gathers very few clicks per month but altogether this low traffic keywords generate most of your traffic and each of them is easy to rank for. Create a page in which the title, headlines, some text, and pictures include different variations of this keyword phrase. That page will rank well for this keyword combination.

I agree with the dude above - the time to start your SEO is not when the site is built, but before it is built.

If you are new to SEO - the one step I feel like people always forget is this:

1. RESEARCH YOUR KEYWORDS

When I started my first internet company, I spent 15 months ranking for a keyword that was what I thought was most important for my business. Once I ranked first, I realized that it didn't convert all that well, and there wasn't much traffic in the area.

I usually recommend making a very generic and broad adwords campaign to start off. Figure out what paid keywords generate traffic and results, then build an SEO campaign off of that.

As for the most important single feature - I would say h1's with keywords in the first 5 words, if not just the keywords alone.

Can I make h1 hidden, just for search engine?
Shore
Yes you can - the standard way of hiding an h1 and replacing with an image is as follows: <h1 id=" style="text-indent:-9999px;display:block;"><img src="img.gif"/></h1>

Hiding text for no legitimate reason can be a quick-fire way to getting a site removed from the index. CSS image replacement is okay if it is replacing like with like for aesthetic purposes.

Title is the key for your SEO.Don't duplicate the title, keep on using one keyword for most of your title. Eg: If you website is www.bookseller.com then try to put "book" in new pages title like "buy a book for seo" or "e-book for seo" or "book: my first 30 days with seo"

I understand its not possible to add in every title but make sure your domain name and your titles match.
