I am interested in learning to create custom backends for Wordpress that extend the functionality.substantially. Anyone know of any books or resources that are particularly helpful for this.

As a developer, I've found WordPress' Custom Meta Box functionality very useful for developing custom admin interfaces. I've written a couple of articles on the subject and have also developed a pretty nice PHP helper class.
