I'm looking for some free-to-use-for-any-purpose (public domain, BSD-license, etc.) playing card images for use in games.

I found a pretty nice collection at http://www.jfitz.com/cards/, but was wondering what other nice collections might be available.

I have Googled for "playing card images" and similar terms, and most of the returned links are for collections that are covered by GPL or are otherwise encumbered, and a lot of them just suck, so I'm hoping for recommendations from people who have found particular sets they like.

(Some people want to close this as "not programming related". I am developing online games. I think this is programming related.)

I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I know how to use Google too. Most of the 75 million links are for cards that are covered by GPL or are otherwise encumbered. I was hoping for specific recommendations.

Fine -- but remember that your question isn't just for you alone and while you can use google, google will eventually end up here as a result of someone else's search and adding a list of links in an answer might help them.

I did google and still found this answer useful. I especially liked the information, found through one of the links above, leading me to http://www.brainjar.com/css/cards/demo.html. The author demonstrates using CSS to generate the cards (except face cards) dynamically.

Why don't you create your own images? Shouldn't be too hard with Photoshop and a nice monospace font available. Even Jacks, Queens and Kings can be incredibly simple to archive, take the following example from Microsoft Spider Solitaire:

IMHO, this is one of the sexiest, simplest card decks I've come across.

This is my favorite answer, but it doesn't really answer the question, so I can't accept it. But thanks for the suggestion.

Sure, you're welcome. =)

There are free playing card images in openclipart. Alternatively, you might use those used in Linux distributions.

All the cards I've seen in Linux distributions are GPL'ed. Do you know of any that are not copylefted?
Kristopher Johnson
Those in openclipart are in the public domain.

Came across these, http://www.ironstarmedia.co.uk/blog/2010/01/free-game-assets-08-playing-card-pack/. Not totally unencumbered but the Creative Commons Attribution License isn't unreasonable.
