Editing with Visual Studio 2008 over Remote Desktop Connection is an insane exercise in patience, as the screen paints and repaints and repaints and flashes like crazy.

Is there any easy fix for this?

Both sides are running Windows 7. Vanilla Visual Studio, without anything installed. Literally every keystroke results in the whole window repainting itself, often multiple times.

Works fine for me. What OS pairs are you using, and do you have any addons such as CodeRush/Resharper/etc?

win 7 <-> win 7. High bandwidth connection from home (probably about 10Mbps) over a VPN. Literally every keystroke causes grotesque repaints as the toolbars flash and flash.

I've had the same issue with Win Vista to Win 7 over LAN (same room) and WLAN

Works fine for me too, similar setup except for the VPN. Win7 to Win7, Server 2008, and Vista. Native Windows VPN seems to work well, too. What is your VPN vendor and setup?

Also, suggest checking RDC options. RDC can be configured for various bandwidths, very low to very high.

Turns out I had Remote Desktop running in 32 bit color mode. In 24 bit mode, it's much much faster.

I had better experiences when the server was Win7/Vista Enterprise/Ultimate with Aero enabled. Aero forces most of the stuff to be rendered on the client side and makes Remote Desktop feel much better.

Doesn't that also require that the RD client is running Vista/W7?

Turning off Resharper fixed this problem for me. I was using a Cisco VPN from Windows XP to Windows Server 2003
