I was wondering if there are any specialist that do java source code review for companies (suggest improvement, etc). What would be a reasonable rate for someone, and what qualifications would they have?

Any suggestions?

Part of the value of code review is knowledge transfer and education within your group. If you outsource it, you're giving away a lot of the benefit. Why pay somebody to do this? Learn to do it better yourself. It's a core ability that you should cultivate.

It's an entirely different matter if you want to hire a mentor to come in and help with the process.

Although you can surely grow such expertise in-house as duffymo suggested, sometimes you simply do not have the time for that, or you need the level of expertise maintaining which in-house makes no sense. If your application code triggers some weird JVM behavior, you might pay a JVM engineer for a few hours, but likely won't hire one as a permanent member of your staff, right?

As for qualifications, you need to engage someone better that yourself and members of your staff, so I would primarily look for a solid track record and verifiable references.

The rate would substantially depend on whether you can ship the code (to a reputable provider) anywhere in the world or you need the consultant to come on-site.

That's not code review. The situation you're citing is entirely different.

@duffymo: Yes, my example was a bit extreme, just to illustrate the idea that you may not, need not, and should not try to maintain all sorts of expertise in-house. Unless you are (competing with the likes of) Google or Apple, that is. :)

@cometta: Somewhat contrary to the above, so far we have only been providing, not consuming such services.
