jQuery: append form input

Question

Hey guys, here is my html output:

</form>

<a href="#" id="rand-character" onclick="append_suggestion()">link</a>

After clicking the link nothing happens (it's supposed to insert link text into the input field). How to correct this link behavior?

cnEl.val(cnEl.val() + " " + $('#rand-character').text());
