why's (poignant) guide showed me that programming could be a fun and creative act

The things I particularly like about the book:

  • Metaphors for concepts and syntax that really stick in your mind, and make reading code fun (hey, I recognise that guy!)
  • Irreverent examples that are far removed from 'business logic' (text adventures, etc.)

Any similar books for PHP, or other C-like languages?

A:

Programming Pearls by Jon Bentley

Elements of Programming Style by Kernighan and Plauger

A little further afield:

Starting Forth by Leo Brodie

A FORTRAN Coloring Book by Roger Kaufman

Check out the Head First series from O'Reilly. I've not seen the Why's (Poignant) Guide to Ruby, so I can't comment on the similarities. However, the Head First series are the closest I've seen to making learning programming concepts enjoyable and easy reading. There's a PHP and MySQL book and several others you may be interested in.

Thanks, I know the Head First books. The SQL one is good.Though, the Head First books read like they're written by ex-hippies (which is fine), whereas why's books is written like an artist. I guess I'm missing that punk aesthetic :)
