My old shell host (StrayNet) is closing up, and I'd like to find a decent, relatively cheap Unix shell host that offers:

  • a couple of background processes

  • email, irc, etc.,

  • an IP address or vhost.

For the record, I do have a Slicehost slice, so I'm not looking for anything to host a project. I just like having a third location to ping from when I'm at work or home. Thanks!

One possibility: http://www.panix.com/

"Panix, the oldest commercial Internet provider in New York, is dedicated to providing stable and reliable Internet access, email, netnews and UNIX computing services to the public. We started in 1989, before the advent of the Internet, and we're still going strong."

"We also specialize in UNIX shell access"

I don't have personal experience with them, but looks like it's slashdot-approved.

I have to recommend my favourite public unix shell: http://sdf.lonestar.org/

They also have free accounts.

I believe for IRC you need at least a Meta ARPA level account. Still, for one flat fee for life you can't argue much.

I've used Westhost for many years. They are inexpensive, although they do not allow IRC hosting.
