But only for very math-centric algorithms with few exceptions. It doesn't help you in any way for object-oriented design or even to learn most of the Java class library.

Practice, practice, practice. You have to start somewhere, and java.lang.Math is good to know.

http://javabat.com/ is a bunch of very small exercises to start getting familiar with the language.

If you are looking for problem sets to improve your algorithm skill, my recommendation is UVA Online Judge http://uva.onlinejudge.org/ They have a good variety of programming problems for all levels. There are also discussion forums targeting these problems on Internet in case you need help.

But this kind of "labs" only improves your algorithm knowledge. While good algorithm knowledge is key to writing good programs, you also need formal knowledge of Java OO concepts, API and many more. Then I suggest you to take the SCJP certification.

Good luck!

And don't forget the best place for Java Greenhorns, yes of course, JavaRanch.com and its Big Moose Saloon.
