Well I had Tomcat 6 up ad running for a long time and then all of a sudden I started getting this error message when I try to go to this page: http://localhost:9090

Method GET not implemented (try POST)

Update: after changing my port to 8780 and accessing http://localhost:8780 I just get this in Firefox:

Unable to connect

I have no idea what is wrong, I have reinstalled Tomcat entirely. Any ideas?

All I am trying to do is get the default tomcat page up for now. not actually trying to use a webapp.

server.xml (removed web.xml examples..ive now changed my port to 8780....)

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>

Are you sure you're accessing the correct port? This error message is typical for invalid SOAP (XML-RPC) requests, not for invalid HTTP requests. The Tomcat admin pages are usually to be served by HTTP. Check /conf/server.xml to verify port number (or to change it).

Are you also sure that it's Tomcat which listens on that port? Maybe you've installed another server software which hijacked that port from Tomcat. If Windows, check it with netstat.

Edit: as per the update (the "Unable to connect" error after changing the port): are you sure you've configured and started the right Tomcat instance? Maybe you've installed multiple Tomcats in parallel.

I went to add/remove programs and killed everything i saw. then went into programfiles directory and killed all the apache apps...

Ok,I think what happened was I had tomcat running as a service. That's the first issue. So when I changed the port as you suggested, I then had two instances running, because I ran the console app in the bin file, after changing the port. So I was running in parallel. I killed all the processes. And now it works. Also, netstat showed me that the port was in use... thanks for that one. I checked the log file in apache and the error complained about the port was already in used. Much appreciated for your guidance kind sir.

Glad you nailed it down. You're welcome.
