I am considering buying an ebook reader (from Sony if you want to know).

Do you know of any sites where you can (legally preferable) download/buy ebooks covering Delphi, Sql, Asp, C#, Html, Css , ... ?

It would be nice to have reference books available on my ebook reader when I am developing software and web sites.

Why not just buy a web enabled phone? Then you could take stackoverflow with you everywhere you went.

I like the idea, but StackOverflow is not a reference site (when I'm looking for the exact syntax on f.i. an Sql or Javascript statement).
Edelcom
True.. However, if you have a browser then you can easily get to any of the online reference sites..

Pragmatic Bookshelf: http://pragprog.com/ sells digital copies of their books. they recently released an SQL antipatterns book that looks interesting. They also have books on CSS. Their selection isn't huge, but the books are generally high quality.

There is also O'reilly safari online: http://my.safaribooksonline.com/ but they are kindof expensive.

Does Safari offer direct ebook downloads without their $$$ subscription? I looked at the subscriptions but couldn't justify the price... although O'Reilly does have some very solid titles

AFAIK no they don't, you have to subscribe. I just found out that my university has a site-wide subscription for all CS students. Take your laptop to your local university and maybe you'll get lucky through their library gateway.

Safari offers some number of "tokens" each month that you can redeem for PDF copies of single chapters. If you subscribe long enough, you can have whole books (minus non-chapter stuff like forewords, tables of contents, and indices). Unused tokens expire at the end of the month, so you have to be diligent about it.

Red-Gate offers a pack of free SQL Server eBooks (direct link to download). Red-Gate also offers some seriously kick-butt tools for both SQL and .NET (felt I needed to plug them to make up for the direct link), so keep them in mind!

  • Mastering SQL Server Profiler
  • How to Become an Exceptional DBA
  • DBA Best Practices
  • SQL Server Maintenace Plans
  • SQL Server Tacklebox
  • The Art of XSD (Separate download)

Also, not free, but Manning Books offers a lot of solid titles in both dead-tree and ebook formats (all in PDF, some .mobi's are starting to show up) and they have frequent discounts for up to 50% off (50% on all titles usually show up once or twice a month). Just follow their Twitter account @ManningBooks or sign up for discount emails.

Since you mentioned C#, it's worth noting Jon Skeet's forthcoming C# In Depth, 2nd Edition.

One place I've bought several e-books before (PDF) is http://apress.com/

PragProg is nice too, I have several of their books. They also have several formats available, including ePub, which I understand is more e-book reader friendly than PDF.

Lulu has the biggest collection for recent Delphi books, many of the books available as PDF or printed, beside that you will find many books for programming language.

another one Amazon, has many books available as eBooks versions (PDF)

My favorite place to go for programming books is SitePoint. They have wonderfully written technical books on everything and anything a programmer might want.

Each book is available in print format, or e-book, or you can buy both print and e-book. They have many free samples and often have discounts. If you buy lots of technical books, you should RSS their blog or follow them on Twitter or Facebook.

Sadly, they don't have any Delphi books. But they have almost everything else: Sql, Asp, C#, Html, Css, ...
