What are good platforms for running out a free application API?

I have a specialized application I would like to make accessible through a public API.

I am wondering what platform to host this on. I am looking for something with low-cost or free hosting.

I know Google Apps Engine is available but what are the other players and what are advantages and disadvantages to each?
