The regular expression to validate email addresses (possibly multiple in to:, cc: and bcc: form) (from RFC 822) is pretty beefy; definitely the longest non-trivial regular expression that I have seen. Unfortunately, it seems that there are a lot of sites out there on the internet that do not use this regular expression or an equivalent validation as I have encountered far too many sites that do not accept [email protected] as a valid email address.

@flybywire: Yes, it's fantastic. I've caught one stupid site allowing my email address to enter in to the open as a result. I guess they didn't want my money anymore.

To avoid confusion: This is so not so complex to validate a single email address, it needs this complexity to validate address blocks e.g. in the destination part of the email header (To:, cc:, etc). These blocks may contain newlines, whitespace etc.

@Earlz: If you put `+somestring` on the end of your email address before the `@gmail.com`, GMail will still deliver the email address to you. But now, you can do filtering on that particular email address. Say I want to give Amazon.com my email address. I might give them `[email protected]`. Then, I might add a filter to tag incoming email from this address as `amazon` and I might set up a rule to forward the email to my wife because she handles the finances. Moreover, if I get spam on that address I know Amazon is the culprit and I can block that email address in the future.

I wrote one several years ago to parse a COBOL data division source code.
We took that parsed tokens to create a XML file and to dynamically build a user interface to test IMS transactions and to generate VB6 code to break that transaction result into XML documents.
