Download a free old version of Bruce Eckel's "Thinking in Java" from the download site. It's not perfect, but it will give you an excellent jump-start.

I like the analogy of object==tv, reference=remote control, as it accurately conveys what happens when multiple references to the same object exist, and is used to change the object.
