At my desk I usually have 2 or 3 magazines sitting around to look at when I take a break or want to refer to something. On my desk currently is 2600 Magazine, Linux Journal and Cooks Illustrated (cooking and programming are remarkably similar)

So what do you read?

I think CoDe is a pretty good one.

Guns & Ammo. Leave it laying out on your desk and watch the complaints about your code plummet.

I actually do this, but not for that reason. I just enjoy the magazine.

Communications of the ACM has always been a favorite of mine for inspirational reading.

When there was a print edition, I used to really enjoy ACM Queue (you can still read it online). Now I read Communications of the ACM - very informative.

I like VSJ, largely because it's free.

Circuit Cellar is the winner for me. A strong focus on hardware, but nearly every project has an embedded processor and thus it's half software, half hardware.

Great for learning lower level concepts (implementing a USB or TCP/IP stack, a simple operating system, time and code efficient math algorithms, etc). Also relates the real world of sensors to software.

Embedded Systems Design is good, but it's a free industry rag so has more ads than content.

If you're interested in getting a little closer to the hardware and processor architecture, this is great.

MSDN, and then lifestyle magazines such as Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, gamer mags, etc., so that it is clear to those who need to know, that you have a life and do not wish to pull a 20-hour weekend.
