Take a look at the Wikibook PHP Programming. It might not be that comprehensive but should give you a brief insight. Another good resource is the official PHP manual.

Always remember to search for the YouTube Videos, they are a great source to learn from, as they have lots & lots of tutorial videos.

Also see for the Official PHP Manual & read the comments of theirs, they are really really helpful. If you don't want to read all the comments, keep a local copy of the manual in your computer memory, by downloading the latest PHP Manual from their official website. You can download the HTML version or the CHM version.

For some quick review & understanding of the basics, you can also go to the W3Schools website, and after completing their PHP course, you can also take their quiz to judge yourself.

Also if you need to search for some PHP Classes (http://www.phpclasses.org/), go for their site only. You will find a whole lot of classes than what you've ever imagined.

One last Note of Caution: Always keep your Basics clear whatever language you learn. That's the most important thing which majority of the developers (along with the students) seem to overlook.

Your approach really depends on your past programming experience. Have you ever programmed before?

If not, then you're probably better off getting a book. I've not done much with PHP recently but you're best having a look at Amazon for a recent PHP book with good reviews.

READ this book

Very good beginner's book on PHP/Mysql. Very easy to understand and gives you a good background in PHP.
