In the SSRS 2008 versions of my reports, I placed the headers for my tablix groups into the report header. Using expressions in hidden tablix columns, I set custom code variables which I then referenced in the header (my headers are concatenations of several report items, so i can't directly reference the report items). This worked fine in SSRS 2008.

After upgrading to SSRS 2008 R2, this no longer works [for me]. I assumed there was now a better way to do it and that this technique was no longer allowed. but i can't find any dicussions about how to do this other than how i did it originally.

I can get this to work by making the hidden column visible again. but, of course, i now have an extra column with a value of 0 displayed that i don't want to see on my report.

i also discovered that after putting another hidden text box in the header and referencing any other report item (whether in the body or another in the header), the technique works again.

has something changed in R2 that would prevent this technique (that seems to have been commonly used in SSRS 2008 reports) from working?

what is the best way in SSRS 2008 R2 of passing data from a tablix to a text box in the header/footer?
