So far, i've tried Vanilla (from lussumo) which keeps breaking, specially on the session handling, and PHPbb which feels like using a bfg9000 to make a phone call.

I self host my blog, and would love to know what's out there. To top it off, this is a would-be site for designers, so flash (not adobe) and content over functionality (e.g., social bookmarking and rss feeds are most surely not a must).

Any ideas? this would run on PHP/MySQL

Cheers,

note: this question differs from this one, this girl needs an ASP application, I'm looking for PHP stuff.

I would recommend PunBB (http://punbb.informer.com/) its very lightweight and development seems to be coming along. I have used it for a couple of sites and its worked out great.

punbb is pretty easy to integrate into other sites too.
Murat Ayfer
seems like it, trying to integrate to my blog at the moment

If you want something really lightweight:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/fruitshow

The other one I've toyed with an liked was phorum:

MyBB or Unclassified NewsBoard

Don't be fooled by repulsive looks of UNB skin. It uses CSS for styling (which is uncommon in PHP forums world), so you can easily make it as pretty as you like.

http://bbpress.org/ is one of the lightest and cleanest forums around. Not really the most attractive but thats a hard combo to ask for.

I would recommend fudforum. It is written by Ilia Alshanetsky, and is well known for excellent security. He was release manager for PHP, plus worked on loads of other PHP products like Xdebug.
