In search of an open-source standalone markdown GUI editor

Where can I find a decent stand-alone (meaning not web-based) Markdown editor? One Markdown syntax highlighting, and preferably HTML preview.

I run both Windows and OS X, so something cross-platform (Java or AIR based) would be ideal.

Eclipse is building markdown editing capability into the Mylin task manager somehow. I've read the announcement but never really looked at it. So unfortunately this is only a lead for you to follow, not a concrete recommendation.

I upvoted your question because I'd be interested to hear about such programs too. I would much prefer editing markdown to WYSIWYG editing in MSWord or similar "heavy" text editing programs.
