I've been in the field about 5 years, and have:

  • never seen it as a requirement
  • never heard of others seeing it as a requirement or even a 'pro' (believe me, I've asked)
  • rarely encountered people who KNEW what it was
  • done the exam, and christened it 'completely useless, beginner level easy, and in no way an indication of aptitude'
  • never had any benefit from having done the exam

In short: some certification-happy, but clueless, companies might value the certificate, but the normal spectrum is largely comprised of either companies which haven't heard from it / don't care about it, or companies which know exactly what it entails and deem it irrelevant.

For getting work 1 finished polished project, with a good story about design decisions, speak more then any certification for PHP I've come across. That being said, if you boss offers you to do the certification in paid time, why the hell not?

I took this test as well as the PHP 4 exam years ago. Short of the occasional email from the Zend Certified Professionals Yellow Pages, I don't feel it has done anything for me.

With that said, it's tough to infer indirect connections between this certification and employment. I think there is value in being able to list this on your resume. So, given the opportunity to take the exam by your employer or during a conference, I would.
