Is Java good for web development?

I am new to Java.

My question is quite straight forward, is java good for web development?

Additional: Can you give me some "cool"(any kind of sites, cool graphics, ecommerce, kids/teens sites, gaming sites etc) websites URL that used java and HTML(or maybe with flash)?

Yes, Java's good for web development. You can use HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Flex with JSPs.

I thought GWT allowed you to write Java but deployed as JavaScript. Whether or not that article is full of lies depends on your definition of "hand written". If the JavaScript is generated from "hand written" GWT, does that qualify?
