I have a customer that is currently using ustream.com as his live video streaming service. Basically he has a site for local sports where they stream the games. The problem is, ustream does not keep a copy of the videos for archiving for watching later.

Basically I'm looking for a php/mysql compatible solution for having him handle the live streaming himself from his website isntead of using ustream or justin.tv

Red5 OS flash server does a very nice job of streaming flash movies.

Its Java, but i have installed it on Ubuntu before and used my PHP sites and an OS client to connect to it on the same server before.

I don't think that's for live streaming though, right? What I need is a way to do live streaming from a live event.

Using the right client you can actually use it for live streaming...though I have not done it.http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forums/jw-player/servers-and-streaming/9574/how-to-stream-live-to-red5

The best and most cost-effective solution would be to use a software encoder like Flash Media Encoder or Windows Media Encoder with a more "open" streaming provider (like NetroMedia). Both encoders would have the option of saving a live stream to file. He can then also edit the file as needed, and upload it for On-Demand streaming.
