My employer has been making some adjustments to reduce and adjust expenditures. I was just *offered* an excellent position in a different business area. I was eager to accept the new position, because it should be challenging and interesting.

Are other programmers experiencing the same thing, and does anyone have any advice for my first few weeks in the new job?

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Try and find a mentor who will give you guidance. Don't be so sure of your solutions until you've been listening for awhile.

This is becoming more and more common as companies are not able to hire new, they are re-adjusting their existing workforce to better align their resources.

I see it as a good thing for those in existing positions with good companies as it encourages and presents many new opportunities within the existing organization.
