i entered a company who runs an intranet page using wss 3.0.
The guy who set it up isnt around anymore and there is no one else with any knowledge about wss so i was asked to get a feel for it. Working on Sites is pretty easy but i dont know anything about settings etc.
I noticed that they never did any backups and looked into backup possibilities for wss and stumbled upon stsadm.exe.
Now doing a backup seems pretty easy with the command line and gives me one huge file.
My problem now is that i have no idea what exactly is in this file and i want to test the restore process.
Is it possible, and if so, how? to open a second site on wss that has no connection to the first site and using the second site to test the restore of the backup?
I really want to be on the safe side and dont want to overwrite something on the running site or mess with the SQL database.
So my question is if there is a way to open a second site to test the backup in a safe environment or do i need to run another wss3.0 install to test it?
