I want to learn a nice easy to use versatile language. I do know some Java, but is it relevant? Or should I move on too JavaScript with the advent of HTML5?

Yes it is still relevant. Have a look at the TIOBE index for programming language popularity.

It all depends on what you want to do. Java and JavaScript are completely different languages.

You can't really use Java to control the behaviour a webpage as you would use JavaScript, and you can't really build a big complex corporate billing system in pure JavaScript.

Both are heavily used today which is probably equivalent to 'relevant'.

Thank you. I was thinking of cloud computing and enterprise apps. I think I am going with Java

The two are used primarily for quite different tasks. Java is used heavily for server-side processing (e.g., Java Beans). JavaScript is used almost exclusively for client-side scripting in web browsers.

Depends what you want to use it for. Java is still very relevant and dominant and I can only see its usage increasing, if only by the rising popularity of Android platform.

Javascript is also very useful language, but meant for different domain of problems than Java, ie dynamic web content.

These two languages are different and are meant to solve different problems. They overlap very little, mainly on their name.
