Can anyone point out some coding chat rooms, IRC servers, or any other way by which I could contact professional or indie programmers live? I haven't had luck finding such chats, since look up shows usually tutorials for writing chat rooms, etc. (one of the troubles our profession causes).

It's for purpose of short questions and quick answers (like how's what named).

Thanks in advance!

What exactly do you need a chat for? While chats are good for quick questions (and random blabber), if you have a question it usually has a matching, correct answer too and in that case a forum or -Gods forbid- a QA site would be the correct place for that, no matter how big or small the question is.

Does it really matter *why* someone asks for something in this case?

@rchern: Mostly yes, because usually if the question is about *why* instead of *how*, it's a meta question.

Freenode has some very good (and highly active) channels for programming. Like for example, #python is particularly good.

irc.freenode.net is the server address. You can also try: webchat.freenode.net to use Freenode from your web browser.

It's also home of the unofficial SO channel, #stackoverflow. :-D
