I was looking at ClamAV and checked it out. I want to help develop (or learn) on writing Antivirus application. I would like to know if there are more than one (ClamAV) opensource antivirus out there and how would you suggest to fork from an opensource if I wanted to make myself a one.

i would suggest that you start off with contributing to any open source projects you find, before considering forking off.
otherwise there is just a big risk that your project would be yet another dead open source project....and the question is also why you would need to fork off to a new project (a question that you probably can answer better once you contributed to an existing project and doesnt like the direction that project takes).
creating yet another project "just because i want to have something of my own" is probably doomed and imo quite pointless.
