As a freelancer, if you are working on a project, and if you outsource the development of a unit or a small component - would it be ethical to do this given that the client is not aware that some development is being developed by a third party?

So long as the work is of good quality (ie, the standards the customer expects from you) and you arent violating some terms of an agreement (NDA's, etc), I dont see any problem. How would it be different from hiring an employee to write code for you?

I always ask for my clients' permission before outsourcing anything. I think it's not polite, proper, and professional to outsource clients' projects without their knowledge.
