Hi everyone, about two years ago I heard of a CS intro course designed around simulating a computer from gates all the way up. The only details I think I remember are that the course used Java and was available as a free online resource.

If you know what course this is, I'd appreciate the pointer though Google might wonder why my sudden spike in search queries has ended :)

Maybe http://www.cs.colby.edu/djskrien/CPUSim/ ?

Thanks, that looks like a good course, but nope. The course I remember guided the student very carefully through the whole process of designing the computer.

I think you're thinking of CS 162 at Berkeley. They do a project with a system called Nachoes where you set up all the interesting parts of an operating system. Free lectures are available online and on iTunes.

Perhaps you are referring to Nachos. It's used to teach students about operating systems and allows them to implement and extend parts of it themselves. Originally written in C++, it was ported to Java by UC Berkeley.
