Project ideas; helpful to a community

Hello, I am in a class now and looking for a good project to work on that would be helpful to a community of people. This could be a new project or maintaining or improving on a project such as an existing open source project. The project is for a group of 3 that will be working for at least a semester, the project doesn't necessarily have to be completed in that time but would need to have reached some sort of milestone. We are all familiar with a wide variety of languages and web technologies and may also be interested in mobile development.

What I mean by a community is pretty broad, it could be something that may be useful to small or non-profit businesses (such as something they would have to pay a lot for regularly) or something useful to the developer community such as a tool of some sort.

The project will be open source.

We recently published a free Android application that presented time tables and maps for the local public transportation. I realize this is pretty dependent on how much your local public transportation is actually used but people definitely appreciated it.

You could also develop a piece of educational software for One Laptop Per Child. You can check it out here.

I am sure there are other open source organizations that you could volunteer with as well.
