that was hard.

According to this article, "the origins of the terms are not known with certainty". That may be true, but I don't trust Wikipedia that much. I've also seen similar statements elsewhere. Also, what I mean to ask is: Does anyone know the origins for sure?

the "that was hard" was in reference to how easy it is to google problems such as these -- there's even a stack overflow question on the same topic.

OK. It's true it's easy to google problems such as these. But what to do if the answers you find don't satisfy you? I think you may have misunderstood my question. I'm not looking for popular etymologies, like the ones in the wikipedia article. I'm looking for scientific facts. I haven't found that yet. There may be such facts somehwere in the texts I've read, that I've missed, though.

PS: It may seem this is a very important subject to me. It wasn't when I asked the question, but it gradually became more important because of the kind of responses I've got. In a day or two, though, I may even have forgotten I've ever asked this question.
