I have heard that there was once a company whose only purpose was to sell Samba to corporations that forbade open source software. Is this true? If so, what was that company's name?

I don't think there ever was. You may be confusing a company that sells samba to the many and various companies that will sell you a support contract as this is usually the barrier to overcome in organisations so that they have someone to point a finger at and scream "FIX ITTTT!

There are plenty on commercial products that use samba though, as evidenced here

The colleague I originally heard the quote from indicated that this was most likely the case. I was *hoping* the company was only *selling* Samba. That would have made me laugh. :)
