ANDROID HTC TATTOO UPGRADE 1.6 to 2.1 OR 2.2 ??

Question

Hi I just got an android phone Htc Tattoo and he had android 1.6 OS installed , I am trying to do some upgrade to some newer Android OS ,
My question : Can someone give me exact steps what and how can I do that ?

(I watch some youtube tut. and some other sites but there are some terms rooter, rom , flashed some tools etc. It is confusing )

I need help from someone who did this , just to tell me a steps :)
