How to cut text to fit a box dynamically?

I know about overflow, and I read the cut off text before read more here on the website. The problem with the: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2725209/cut-off-text-before-read-more for me is that it will put "..." after every line — I have a block of text I would like to truncate.

How do I do that? Is overflow my only solution? What will I do with the top couple of pixels from the next line that is hidden?
