Are there any open source mobile ad servers available? I have heard of Adhere, based on a version of OpenX, but the development seems to have stopped since last year.

A:

Being the project manager behind AdServerBeans (open source ad server - http://www.adserverbeans.com) I keep hearing mobile this and mobile that. What I'm not hearing is:

  • I would like to serve image ads using WAP protocol
  • I would like to serve image ads to Java games on mobile phones
  • I would like to target users by carrier

Can you do that?

My point is: there's a myriad of features that can apply to the concept 'mobile ad server'. The same applies to a web ad server. Not everyone who claims to be a truly mobile ad serving company really is. They might just as well simply send bulk SMS messages and track click-to-calls.

And it's the other way around: modern mobile browsers are advanced enough to display ads served by regular web ad servers that are not optimized for mobile users.

This reminds me of the 'Web 2.0' buzzword. Everybody heard it, no one can tell what it is.
