Naming products

Choosing a name it's difficult... at least for me, it's agonizing.

I've been know for using names of animals and characters of sci-fi series for the internal code name of a project... but the public name of a product it's very difficult for me.

So how did you choose the name of the product you're working on?

Figure out what you want your project to resemble. Think of an easy word to describe it, and then look at alternative words that mean the same. It could be in the same language, different language, whatever. Some of those words actually represent an interesting name with the same meaning. Hell, mash together something that looks cool and could hold meaning if you need too (acronym, and I wouldn't advise things like OGC)

For example.

'Calix' came to me by looking up Handsome.

'Manqué' came to me by looking up Failure.

But the bottom line is, Just pick something that defines your project in /some/ way.

One of the most well known resources about naming products and companies is the Igor's Naming Guide.

It's a long read, but it has very good advice and makes you think about some aspects of naming a product that you may not be aware of.

If the name is to be used publicly at all - marketing, on the web, etc., just be sure you pick a name that someone else isn’t already using for anything at all similar. At least do a Google search. And before you spend money on advertising or anything like that, spend a few bucks to get a search done in one of the more specialized name and trademark databases. At least in the US, being first with a name gives you legal rights and it’s cheaper to do the search than to have to change your name later.

Of course before you go too far, make sure the domain name is available, too.

For stronger legal rights in the name, pick something that’s made up and not just a generic reference to what your product does. Somebody like Microsoft can spend oceans of money to get legal protection of something like “Word” or “Windows” - you probably can’t.
