I'm talking about a forum/message board where people just talk about the Ruby language - quite aside from its use in terms of Ruby-on-Rails.

It seems most languages have favorite forums outside of Stackoverflow - just wondering what that would be for Ruby. I've had a look on Google but what comes up seems to be mostly personal blogs about Ruby.

ruby-talk (alternate mirror) is the main discussion list for Ruby programmers.

I am not aware of any large web-based discussion forums about Ruby. You can see a large list of listserv archives at Ruby Forum, and your community may have a user group with its own mailing list. The user group in my area is quite active, and I can usually get my questions answered there.

Update: I should mention RubyFlow if you're interested in news about Ruby. Not much discussion on the site, though.

Seconded. ruby-talk is the place to be for ruby discussion. You can use google groups or gmane or ruby-forum (or NNTP, although I seem to recall there were always problems with the news/mail gateways) if you're opposed to subscribing to a mailing list.

There are a number of resources (mailing lists, forums, IRC) listed in the community section of the Ruby site.

It is focused on Rails, but Rails Forum has a great community, or at least it did back when I frequented it a lot as a RoR developer.
